In Gavdos, sea and nature all to discover

On the wild island of Gavdos among pristine beaches, small white villages and excursions to the discovery of lighthouses and other magical places

70 kilometers south of the southern coast of Crete lies the island of Gavdos, one of the most beautiful and remote places in Greece, once a secluded and often exile destination for political figures and dissidents, especially under the dictatorship of Joannis Metexas . Homer already quotes it in the Odyssey by the name of Ogigia, while the Venetians decided to call it Gozzo and, since it is the southernmost point of the whole of Europe, is the favorite destination of those who do not like conventional tourist resorts and prefer the contact with nature (not by chance, free and nudist campers are among the usual visitors).

The white reefs of the south coast, the ocher earth and the sun-reflecting sand invite you to discover every corner of Gavdos starting from the harbor to the north where you can take the road that will take you to a must-see destination, the Lakoudi beach you can only walk on foot and at the end of a nice walk will take you in front of a blue sea that you can not resist. Considering that Gavdos is a small island, soon, continuing your journey, you will find it on its tip south of Tripiti Bay, a truly unusual place. Do not forget to take a nice selfie sitting on the giant chair over the beach and give you an incredible view of the background. Equally enchanting are the beach of Potamos with its reddish beach and Pyrgos beach on the opposite end of Gavdos in the northwest. These beaches are definitely the wildest and few offer services or equipment, so remember to bring along the necessary snacks and snacks.

If you prefer a more comfortable place you can choose the most frivolous beaches of Gavdos, among which the most famous is Agios Ioannis, located next to a small village with some of the most loved by naturists for the crystal clear sea and the sand here and there from junipers making it a paradise. Sarakinikos beach, on the other hand, is about 2 km from the harbor, and the small taverns that will be overlooked will also give you the chance to sample some local specialties. If you are passionate about history, on the hill of Kavos, you can admire the numerous prehistoric ceramic shells and stone utensils, while Sarakinikos is still visible in the building where Velouchiotis Aris, founder of the National Liberation Army people who were exiled to this place.

Leaving the beaches to go on a tour of the island of Gavdos you will soon discover that the architecture of the villages consists of one-storey cubic cubicles with a sort of tool-assisted enrichment and enriched by the inaccessible horticulture adjacent to the building. Visiting Kastri, the most important center in Gavdos, you will find that time has stopped and the small village will give you unique landscapes, while in the surrounding area, Lebanon’s pine and cedar woods are a shelter for many bird species.

If you can miss a day at the beach for a pleasant hike, Gavdos Island offers a number of well-groomed trails that allow you to reach the 17 rural churches scattered here and there or the 1880’s lighthouse on the southwest coast. A visit to the latter will prove to be very interesting to understand how it works, since today the structure has lost its original function and the lighthouse is used as a café even though part of the building (the most interesting one) houses a small museum which tells the story through the show of ancient equipment and photographs. We recommend keeping you here until sunset because the show is really magical!

Being a somewhat wild island, Gavdos is quite difficult to spin because transport is few so you need to plan your trip with some caution. To get to Gavdos you can embark on ferries departing from PaleophÃa or HÃara Sfakion and arriving at the port of Karave. Once you arrive on the island, you can use buses that, upon arrival of each ferry, generally provide tourists beaches and the most famous resorts.

I never gave up everything? Somebody did and went to Jamaica

Not only Bob Marley, beaches and cannabis. Andrea Cavallo Perin has dropped everything and left for six months exploring the Caribbean island every respect. His story
“Drop everything”. Hands up who has not thought at least once in their lifetime. Someone, in addition to having thought, has also done. Andrea Cavallo Perin, creative Turin of 29, he left for Jamaica in order to discover traditions and customs. And correct just clichés frequently. Let’s start with this: reeds, Bob Marley, breathtaking beaches, homophobia. “For heaven’s sake, all true, except racism: never look or an insult because they are white. Jamaica is far “, explains just returned from the Caribbean island after six months. “People have a great memory of the past because he lived and was freed from slavery. For Accompong Maroon for example, a man took me into the forest and showed me the place where his ancestors had fought for his life. That place, like many other things, is blessed with the rum, a rite of purification. ” It is thanks to a Jamaican rum, Appleton Rum, that Andrea was able to document everything.
“The rum in Jamaica is regarded as our wine, we do not miss my table and varies from Azona in the area, and also by social status.”
The exploration
“Every day, wake up at 7:30, breakfast with ackee, tropical fruit and Saltfish, dried fish; then exploring the length and breadth of the island. ” The thing that struck him was the nature: “dominates the man with all its power and luxuriance” But even people, “now tell much about himself and their country, from the manager to the farmer, without distinctions. But also reggae, slavery and much more. ” But there is one aspect that Andrea did not like: the slowness. “It will be in the heat but we have totally different rhythms and I have not managed to adapt. Everyone says: “Jamaica no problem”. ” The only thing that Andrea will is a biped bird: the chicken. “They call it Jerk chicken and cooked in many different ways. I’d had enough. ”
The journey is over, but for six months Andrew has really dropped everything, beginning with his work that is now ready to take it back. Not behind a desk, but still with a video camera, “I’m leaving for the” Around the World in 80 Days “. That is a video project that will tell the generation of global shapers, those young people who have invented something relevant and living in the same city in the book by Jules Verne. “

It ‘s not known what is the island chosen it’ the price but there are rumors that the champion Real Madrid has shelled out around 4 million Euros. Certainly less than you would spend to make a penthouse in Chelsea.
It ‘s always been the dream of super-rich men own their own island. And today, thanks to the disastrous situation of the country, the favorite seems to be Greece, where private owners, in view of the increase in property taxes, they decide to market their own jewels of the sea, which has always been handed down from generation to generation.
There are about twenty islands owned ‘private currently for sale. On the site Private Islands Online, specializing in the sale of its islands around the world, sixteen are today “available for sale”. The most ‘expensive (although for many the price is not’ visible unless requested) and ‘Omfori, worth 56 million Euros, “a paradise on earth” in the Ionian Sea of 4.5 million square meters on which the government granted the necessary permits to build up to 20% of the territory.

It follows, always in the Ionian Sea, Dulichium 44 million EUR 5.4 million square meters – making it the most ‘extensive private Greek island – the mouth of the Gulf of Corinth. But with much less (4.9 million euro) you can ‘buy Stroggilo that, in spite of the gossip in July that gave Johnny Depp as a buyer, it is still for sale on the site: the island of 218 thousand square meters to 110 meters of the beach, it is located in the Aegean Sea near the most ‘tourist Patmos. For “only” 3.3 million Euros you can ‘buy Linhari Peninsula, 10 minutes from Corinth. “The price and ‘already’ been halved – precise Private Islands Online – this incredible opportunity ‘not remain’ free long.” But the island more ‘economic you can’ find another portal specialized Valdi Private Islands, based in Hamburg and that today are five solutions: 1.6 million Euros sells St. Athanasios, a mini islet 10 thousand square meters ever in the Gulf of Corinth.
Also having the chance ‘, buy a Greek island and not’ anyway so ‘easy: many are not building, and for other difficult’ access to private planes, too many bureaucratic procedures to obtain permission. “National pride and red tape holding back the business,” explained a few days ago Farhad Vladi, founder of the real estate group. “Who buys should get no less than 32 permits, including ok Defense Ministry and Agriculture, in the end the customer often forget exasperated by the government greek.” Not to mention that in Greece the beaches are public, which ‘means that no matter how remote the island can be any person can’ dock and plant your own umbrella.
Contrary to what some imagine in Germany and Finland, but also in Switzerland, where members of the extreme right have demanded that Athens repay the debts by selling the islands, the greek state owns only a modest number. Among the properties’ public instead they include pieces of land also quite areas. For example, about a third of the island of Mykonos and ‘owned’ public. Currently, the public fund greek privatization (HRADF) has held islands and land. The property that are part of the fund are 35 palaces, and the rest ‘represented by companies’, banks, airport concessions and 10 port concessions.

However, buying an island in Greece can ‘be more’ simple than buying a villa or a land with beach. The Land Registry greek and ‘backlog. Are only 4 million properties’ surveyed and recorded.
