Late summer, this year’s’ boom of who prolongs the summer holidays in September (+ 7%) and October (+ 5%). In Italy, in Sicily head. And in the Aegean Sea, the islands’ south where the sun and the water remain warm until late autumn.

From the living you can see the kitchen counter, the kingdom of Ornella Malacarne, the Italian chef who prepares breakfast with the same commitment required for a dinner of falls. Served in the courtyard, the other living in the hotel: vegetable quiche, sweet light but delicious, homemade jams, fruit salads triumphal white and wholemeal bread, sage honey from the island of Karpathos. In the evening, aperitif wines with new, young and enterprising Greek producers. And always prepared dinners on request by Ornella.
Just in front of the red front door there ‘the Byzantine church of San Giovanni Battista (1470), open to visitors in the evening: it was restored by the owners of the hotel, Nikos Voulgaridis and his wife, and frescoes in the vaults in barrel. A hotel for beach holidays although far from the sea, but in the heart of the story.
Those who book a minimum four-day free rental car to reach the beaches most ‘nearby. Among the rocks of Kallithea, the former baths built during the Italian occupation 8 km from the city, there are five beaches, Thassos and Oasis are the most beautiful with their seaside taverns. Farthest Afandou, 4 km of sand and small stones, deserted even in August. Of note here Katholiki, popular restaurant famous for chickpea fritters and other homemade dishes (tel.0030.2241.052066 / 053,291). It takes its name from the nearby Byzantine church built like a puzzle with marble columns and capitals of an ancient temple.

Shopping: jewelry designer from The magic in Odos Omirou, and Witch & Cat, a boutique at 10 Ippodamou full of friendly cats; Asters, rigatterie- copper smith in odos Fanouriou. The dinner is to be recommended in the garden of Marco Polo Mansion, creative Greek cuisine but not outlandish: try the spinach salad, orange and pomegranate; pork tenderloin with figs, beans mousse with caramelized onions (penalty booking:; el. 0030.2241.025562). Do not miss the Archaeological Museum, the exhibition from the Louvre, on the pottery of ancient Rhodes.
